Whether it’s the result of sitting at a desk all day, looking down at a smartphone, lounging on a couch or genetics, poor posture is afflicting people of all ages. The ill-effects of these are sometimes not spotted easily.
These are some problems linked to poor posture that may surprise you (most people don’t even know it’s the posture)
The three main curves of a properly aligned spine form an ‘S’ shape. Over time poor posture can cause these natural curves to change shape, putting an excessive amount of pressure in the wrong position.
Our spines are built to absorb shock, but poor posture can slowly deteriorate this natural ability, putting your back at risk for more serious injury in the future.
It’s the most common effect of poor posture. It puts unwanted strain on your upper and lower back. Slouching forward puts pressure between your shoulder blades and causes you to flatten your back muscles. So if you notice pain below the neck and around your tailbone after a long day at work, you are likely not sitting up straight.
Poor posture puts pressure on your posterior muscles, which has a negative impact on your neck. Whether your shoulders are hunched forward or your head is aimed downward, the strain put on your neck by the tightness of these muscles can lead to tension headaches.
Deficient posture can put your entire system in a compressing position. If you are unable to fully relax your body at night, you may find yourself tossing and turning to find a comfortable position for neck and back, which can lead to hours of lost sleep.
If you have an office job that requires you to stay at a desk most of the day, sitting with bad posture can lead to digestive issues. Neglecting to pay attention to your posture can compress your organs, which can show the digestive process and cause stomach issues.
Poor Posture on a toilet – hunched over with your knees lower than hips – can promote constipation. That position closes the anus somewhat and makes it harder for the abdominal muscles to help move feces out. Constipation is characterized by fewer than three bowel movements per week; hard, dry stools; straining to move the bowels; and a sense of an incomplete evacuation.
Slouched posture after a meal can trigger heartburn caused by acid reflux (when stomach acid squirts back up into the esophagus). “Slouching puts pressure on the abdomen, which can force stomach acid in the wrong direction”, explains Dr. Kyle Staller, a gastroenterologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital.
“And some evidence suggests that transit in the intestines slows when you slouch. In our opinion, it probably does play a small role.”
When you do not sit up straight or stand with your shoulders back, it can also have a negative impact on your work ethic. Your focus will be on trying to feel comfortable, rather than the task at hand. Bad posture is also correlated to low self-esteem, as per Health Psychology.
Posture is basically the position we hold our bodies in while sitting, and even when lying down. A good posture ensures that our entire body is symmetrically aligned and the muscles tension is just about right.
In such a state the breath evenly flows through the body and the mind experiences rest and calm.
According to our body, size, weight, shape, proportion, structure our correct posture will be unique to us.
